To help you come up with strategies and ideas for Women’s History Month social media campaigns for your business, we’ve put together a guide to how five different industries might approach the topic. You’re welcome to take inspiration and use our ideas to craft your own marketing strategy for this important occasion.

About Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day

Women’s History Month is celebrated every year during the month of March. This occasion recognizes women’s achievements and contributions throughout history. In fact, it began as “Women’s History Week, “declared by the Education Task Force of the National Women’s History Project in 1981. It was later expanded to an entire month by a Presidential Proclamation in 1987. Today, Women’s History Month aims to raise awareness of women’s contributions to various fields.

While Women’s History Month originated in the United States, International Women’s Day is a global occasion. Celebrated every year on March 8th, International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975. The overall purpose of International Women’s Day is to recognize women’s achievements in politics, culture, and society. Each year, there is a new theme announced for International Women’s Day, with events and activities organized around the world for awareness and celebration.

Content and Marketing for Women’s History Month

Both Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day are fantastic content opportunities for businesses of all types and sizes. Creating content for these occasions can help you show support for the cause and raise awareness of women’s achievements and struggles. This is especially important at a time when 70% of consumers believe it’s important for brands to take a public stance on social and political issues.

Further, creating content for these occasions can help you join in on a larger conversation in order to reach new audiences and connect with your current customers. And it doesn’t hurt that it can give you ideas and topics for an entire month’s worth of social media content in order to keep your accounts active and full of fresh posts.

In order to give you a more concrete idea of the exact types of content you can post for Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, we’ve put together this guide, organized by industry. Below, you’ll be able to find video and content ideas that can work for different business types. You’re welcome to use them for inspiration for your own business’s social media campaigns this March.

Real Estate

Like most industries, the real estate sector is a great example of why Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day are so important. Because while 65% of all realtors are women, they are less represented in leadership and make less money than their male equivalents.

A report found women only occupy 9% of C-level positions in commercial real estate. And in 2020, women brokers and sales agents made 69 cents to a man’s dollar for the same job.

For this reason, real estate agents have a concrete reason to care about Women’s History Month, and a lot of possible topics to create content about.

Video and Content Idea

  • Rise in single woman home ownership – Did you know that more single women are buying houses than ever? This is a great topic to create content about celebrating women’s independence.
  • Women real estate agents – If you are a woman real estate agent or work for an agency with multiple women realtors, this is a great time to create content uplifting and celebrating them. You can share videos in which your women agents share their stories, including how they came to work in the industry, any sexism they may have faced, achievements they have accomplished, and so on.
  • Commercial real estate – Women make up only 36.7% of the commercial real estate workforce. Women’s History Month gives you a chance to educate your audience about this fact, helping bring awareness to the importance of giving women more opportunities in CRE.
  • Real estate pay gap – Another topic you can bring awareness to in your Women’s History Month is the pay gap in real estate. You can take this opportunity to advocate for equal pay in your industry, taking a public stance.
  • Influential women in real estate – There are plenty of content opportunities to explore all of the amazing women in the real estate field and their important accomplishments. Create videos highlighting women like Melissa Alexander, Hope Atuel, and Kenisha Robnett to celebrate them and inspire others.
  • Tips for women realtors starting out – If you’re a more experienced realtor with several years under your belt, you can take this chance to share some tips to help women who are just starting out in the field.
  • Tips for buyers – Publish a video full of tips for women who are looking to buy their first homes.

Finance

In North America, women are dramatically underrepresented in the financial services workforce, especially at the level of senior management and above. Women are significantly less likely than men to be promoted and are more likely to report feeling burned out. Not only that, but the finance industry also has the second-largest pay gap in the United States.

If you work in the finance field, it’s clear how important Women’s History Month is to continue to push for equality for women professionals. This can inspire you to create a variety of content types for your social media, including the ideas we share below.

Video and Content Ideas

    • Recognizing women in finance – Take this opportunity to highlight and showcase women in finance, whether that is from within your company or in the larger industry.
  • Investing tips for women – Financial independence is a huge factor in opportunity and equality. Give women a leg up by offering investing tips they can use.
  • Donations – In honor of Women’s History Month, why not make a donation to an organization like Girls Who Invest and post about it encouraging your audience to do the same?
    • Education – Spread awareness to your audience by sharing statistics about the pay gap and the promotion gap in the finance industry.
    • Women make teams stronger – Create content discussing the fact that women help companies perform better. It’s been shown that private equity teams that include at least one woman have been proven to outperform all-male teams by every private equity performance indicator available.
    • Host a networking event – Consider hosting an International Women’s Day women’s finance networking event. In addition to helping out local professionals, this will also give you a lot of opportunities to create content, from invitations to the event to recaps of how it went.
  • Career advice for women in finance – Do your part to fight the promotion gap by offering career advice for women finance professionals that will help them get a leg up in the field.

Health and Fitness

From the outside, the health and fitness industry may appear relatively equal. Indeed, the majority of fitness instructors and personal trainers are women. Yet the stereotype is that male personal trainers are more commonplace and more effective. For this reason, women often have to work harder to prove to their clients that they are qualified to train them. And, yes, just like other industries, women’s representation in health and fitness decreases as you go up in the ranks, with fewer women holding executive and senior leadership roles.

If you’re a woman in the health and fitness industry, you know just how empowering working out can be. Women’s History Month gives you a great opportunity to share your passion with a female audience, helping educate them and give them the tools they need to grow stronger and more powerful.

Video and Content Ideas

  • Health and fitness tips for women – Women’s bodies are different from men’s, and there are different health and fitness practices that are better suited to them. Take this month as an opportunity to focus on sharing diet and exercise tips that help women in particular.
  • Benefits of fitness for women – Similarly, women will receive some different benefits from working out than men. Women’s History Month is a great chance to educate about the benefits of fitness for women.
  • Showcasing powerful women in fitness – There are so many different women achieving amazing things in the health and fitness industry. Why not take this chance to give them a shout-out? Women such as Gemma Ovens, Sevgi Anar, and Rima Faour are all great examples.
  • The history of women and fitness – Another topic to create educational content around is the history of women in fitness, about which there are some interesting stories that not everybody knows.
  • Debunking women’s fitness myths – One major challenge for women in health and fitness is just how many myths there are out there that people believe in, such as spot reduction and concerns about “getting too bulky.” Create a video busting these myths to share on social media.

Food and Beverage

A majority of women – 60% to be exact – have worked in the restaurant industry at some point in their lives, and about 71% of servers in the United States are women. Yet only 38% of executive workers in the restaurant industry are women. In prominent U.S. restaurant groups, only 6.3% of head chefs are women. And, yes, there is a pay gap in the restaurant industry, too. Women chefs have been found to make 28% less than their male counterparts.

If your business is in the food industry, there are plenty of topics available for you to make content about for Women’s History Month.

Video and Content Ideas

  • Showcasing women in food – Throughout history, women have accomplished incredible things in the food industry. From Julia Childs to Pinky Cole to Christina Tosi, take this month to highlight the history of women in food, including all of the amazing women chefs out there.
    • Pay gap – This is a great chance to educate your audience about the pay gap in the restaurant industry in order to raise awareness of the inequality that continues to exist.
    • Organizations making a change – There are a number of wonderful organizations like The Lee Initiative, Let’s Talk Woman, Restauranter, and Regarding Her seeking to make a change in the food industry in order to help women. Consider showcasing them on your social media in honor of Women’s History Month.
  • Tips for women chefs and restaurateurs – If you have any, this is a perfect opportunity to share tips for women with ambitions to become a chef or a restaurant owner.
  • Profiles – Take this chance to uplift your women staff members, from servers to executives and anybody in between. Let them share their story – and, for a cute touch, their favorite food that you serve.
  • Recipe contest – For a fun, interactive type of content, consider holding a contest in which your female followers get the chance to submit and vote for recipe ideas. Your restaurant can make and serve the winning one throughout the month of March.
  • Share recipes created by women – Let your audience get their hands dirty by sharing some of your favorite recipes created by women that they can try making, whether that’s famous women chefs or your mom’s famous home cooking.

E-Commerce

If you own an e-commerce business, it’s likely that a large percentage of your audience is female. After all, women drive 70 to 80% of all consumer purchasing. This means that Women’s History Month is an important occasion for your business to recognize, and women’s rights and accomplishments are an important topics to discuss.

Video and Content Ideas

    • Gift guides and product suggestions – It’s common for people around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day by buying gifts for the women in their lives. Help them out by giving product suggestions or gift guides of products from your store that a person’s friend, mother, sister, or partner might love.
  • Showcasing women in ecommerce – Are there women store owners who you admire or who have achieved something impressive? Give them a shout-out on your social media in honor of women’s history month.
    • Women’s History Month discount – Take to your social media to promote a sale or coupon code that buyers can enjoy in honor of International Women’s Day and/or Women’s History Month.
  • Share resources for women in ecommerce – Help uplift women by sharing resources that might be helpful for a beginner just starting out in ecommerce.
  • Influencer marketing – Take this occasion to partner with powerful women influencers for an influencer marketing campaign for your store.
  • Tell your story – If you are a woman running a business, this is a great chance for you to share your story on social media. Not only will you be able to inspire other people interested in starting their own ecommerce store, but you’re also sure to find like-minded business owners to talk to about shared experiences.
